nighttime dufus

10 p.m. arrives and like clockwork, my brain’s frontal lobe functions turn off for the night. That’s true whether or not I’m sleeping, y’all. I just can’t think straight past 10. Amygdala is wide awake, however, ready to go all squawky when the slightest problem is detected: Too low! Too high! You better do something! You have to get up in 3 hours! You need to sleep! Do something NOW! Thing is, without the frontal lobe diciphering the squawks and injecting some rational thought into the mix, Dufus status takes hold.

As a result, I do unreasonable things in order to beat Madeline’s BG into submission. If they work, I assure you that it’s just sheer dumb luck. More often, squawky-dufus-brain decisions just set me on a pendulum ride all night long.

See for yourself.

10:10 p.m. 5-4-3-2-1—->Madeline’s BG is 97. Insulin on board.  (Low ahead! Low ahead!) Oh yes, that 97 will work just fine. And I can go to sleep.

(No, you really cannot go to sleep. Low ahead!) Toss. Turn. Toss. Turn.

10:30 p.m. Might as well check her again. 5-4-3-2-1—->71.  (Too low! Too low!) Time for carbs. Won’t be messin’ round with no low tonight. 15 grams are pumped into Madeline, straw to mouth to belly to bloodstream.

Toss. Turn. Some more.

11:10 p.m. Better just check again. I bet my plan worked!  5-4-3-2-1—->102.  Oh, that is lovely. But I wanna sleeeeeeeeppppp. I could keep her in range by decreasing the basal rate for a while. How much? (You need sleep! SLEEP NOW!) Let’s say, -90% for hours. Yep that sounds about right.

Sleep ETA 11:30. Finally.

12:10 a.m. 5-4-3-2-1—->124. Well looky there, my strategy worked. (Going high! Going high!) Alright, alright, reset the basal rate. How about -40% for 3 hours? Oooo, sleeeep.


2:10 a.m. 5-4-3-2-1—->239. (Dumbass! Too HIGH!) Correct it, right? Yes, correct it. Use a basal increase instead. Nice and gentle decline, vs. dropping like a stone. How much? Oh, let’s see about +30% for 2.5 hours. That should do it.


6:30 a.m. 5-4-3-2-1—->226. (If you had just used a correction bolus, she’d be in range right now.) Frontal lobe functions slowly resume. Correction bolus given.

Madeline sleeps in. I eat. I exercise. I shower. I think about overnight adventures. Who thinks that a BG of 97 is sufficient for sleeping? You shoulda boosted her with a few carbs and wa-la, she would have been in range all night long. Who uses a 90% basal decrease anyway? And basal increases never work to lower Madeline’s BGs. You gotta use a correction.

9:15 a.m. 5-4-3-2-1—->89. Oh, yeah.

  1. this is so familiar! but stepping outside of my head…and reading it from the outside makes me aware of the impossible standard we’re using as a measuring stick. take care…
